Today we headed out to Tougas Farm for our favorite fall pastime, apple picking. Apple picking here is a Big Deal. When I was little, you picked your apples, maybe got a donut and a pixie cup of cider. Today, orchards have gotten smart. There's petting zoos, playgrounds, hayrides, wagon rides, mini-trains, and anything passable as fall food for sale. We arrived at 10 on the dot to beat the crowds and there was still a Field of Dreams line of cars behind us. But, in spite of all of this big-businessing of picking fruit, all I have to do is smell the aroma of frying apple-cider donuts and bam, I'm 5 years old again, picking apples with my mom, and the rest of the day is pure happiness.
We filled up a bag full of Cortland, Sunnycrisp, Topaz, Idared, Empire, & Mutsu and munched our way home. Mutsu - never heard of them before, but they are DELICIOUS. Go find some!

I remember baking apple cake with you one fall! Do you have plans for one with your latest haul?
BTW, I sure do miss the cider donuts at Atkins Farms in Amherst. Yummy!
seriously, now I want cider donuts soooo badly. If you know someone in Western Mass who will buy me some and ship them to me, I'd be happy to pay them for their trouble. They'd have to be more affordable than shipping them directly from Atkins ($41 dollars!! + the price of the donuts!). ;)
Sorry to say I think they'd be totally dried out by the time they reach you. Maybe this is a sign that it's time to buy a deep-fat fryer and make them yourself!!
Cider donuts are crazy good, sigh.
Actually made the apple cake yesterday! But I overbaked a bit, big bummer. I am going to post the recipe as it's such a big part of my fall.
please do! Then I can make it. I stopped into Whole Foods this morning and they were awash in our own Texas-sized version of apple mania.
