Fight or flight?

Yesterday, Jaya got his first push. I don't mean the Accidental Push by Totally Mental Preschooler or Meant to Hug You but it Turned into a Wrestle Push, but the Mean Boy on the Playground Push. Jaya was predictably upset by this. "I just wanted to play tag with the kids. Why did he push me down?" he said, trying to hold back tears. Now I endeavor to keep all things in perspective as a mom and avoid Mamma Drama, but seeing my 4 year old trying to be brave in the face of Mean Boy playground behavior just pushed all of my mommy buttons. "The next time someone pushes you, you just push them back harder!" was what I immediately wanted to say, but this thought led me to a new parenting dilemma. Playground violence: engage or disengage?
I'm not sure what the right way to steer your child is here. On the one hand, nobody wants to endorse violence, on the other, nobody wants their kids to be walked all over. Of course, Augusti immediately started talking about martial arts lessons. Before we get all sensei, any thoughts out there?
