I'm a big music fan. I have a wide range of tastes and I'd like my kids to have the same. I'm delighted that Jaya and Annika love music and certainly encourage them to listen to anything and everything. Recently, through discovering a mix CD given to him for his last birthday, Jaya has discovered a passion for songs of the techno/house/dance/euro/club variety. While this genre has its merits, say, in your early 20's at a full moon party in Thailand with lots of Red Bull & Jack, waking up to Reel to Real grinding out "I like to Move it" at 6AM is not what I have in mind. I'm also not sure how I feel about my 4 year old son belting out vocals relating to pink champagne and taking off clothes in the rain, irresistable rhymes though they are.
Here's a little sampler from our favorite new CD:
La Vida Loca
Who Let the Dogs Out (which, not surprisingly, has been 3rd out of the 20 most annoying songs ever. I could not locate the rest of this list online, but I think it's just about every other song on this CD)
Chipmunks dance mix - Why, why?
Funkytown - Inexplicably, #1 in 1980.
And as soon as I get out of bed, I am accosted with dance lessons, as Jaya will tell you very proudly, he KNOWS how to disco dance. Among some of the moves I have recently learned are to "blink my eyes, really fast" and "tap my feet, both ways". I don't recall John Travolta ever doing this, but at 6 AM, I don't have a lot of fight in me.
The one saving grace of this CD is Jump N' Move by the Brand New Heavies from the Happy Feet Soundtrack. This song, I will get out of bed for. Even with dance lessons.

Ah yes, kids and music. Will's current favorite song, seriously, is "Single Ladies." He randomly walks by singing "all the sing-gle ladies, all the sing-gle ladies." And the other day Jeremy caught him singing in the backseat, "Hope it gives you hell, gives you hell." Maybe it's time for us to revisit our music choices when the little ones are around.
At this very moment, Jaya is singing "shake it like a Polaroid picture".
We better keep a close eye on Annika & Will when they are together.
Henry really likes that "I Like to Move It" song. I don't even know where he heard it. I'm with you -- I'm up for all music, but I don't have too high a tolerance for that of the La Vida Loca ilk.
You will have a new mix CD from us when you come up (the one we did for Eli's Third Birthday). Which was the one I gave you? Henry's 4th? Henry's 5th birthday one is the best one; I'll burn that for you too, if it's not the one you have.
We have the 4th bday one! It was HOT at the Syah house for a good long while, before discovery of the afore-blogged CD. Looking forward to the new ones!
I did just download the Slumdog soundtrack, which Jaya loves & I think is a lot of fun too.
Ok, so you'll be getting at least three of the past birthday cds (Eli 2 and 3, Henry 5) (where are Henry 3 and Eli 1? I should look into this...).
