Bad.
Good.I'm a big fan of childrens book illustration. I even have grown-up books about childrens book illustration that I enjoy all on my own. But there seems to be an unwritten rule in childrens-book land that it's OK for dinosaur books to be illustrated in the fashion of 1950's sci-fi/horror paperbacks- you know, the ones about mutant lizard beings taking over the world.
Why is this? Do editors feel that children interested in dinosaurs are so science-minded that they won't notice the bad dino-beings in sunset pink and cyan? Or is it a secret conspiracy to torture Art Director parents of dinophiliac children? But, The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins, introduced to me by my friend and saviour Julie, is the exception to the rule. Illustrated and art-directed among the best of them, I actually read this book again on my own after Jaya went to bed last night, savoring every beautifully rendered page.

so true! Robby recently got one that even had text that was gorey--complete with "sinking sharp teeth into necks" etc. Too much. I much prefer the illustrations of the "How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight, Eat Their Food, Go to School" series of picture books. Do you have those? They're great!
