Wonderful day with a touch of the Apocalypse.

Play Date at the ICA has become one of my favorite winter weekend activities. It's free, full of interesting contemporary art appealing to me and Jaya, and a fabulous organized craft that I get to walk away from with no clean-up. I'm a fan of all art, but I find as an Art Director the graphic and conceptual nature of modern art to be really rejuvenating after slogging away in the world of corporate marketing, where concepts are often sacrificed to the insatiable gods of Big Logos and Bigger Price Points.
And unlike classical art, modern art doesn't require big explanations along the lines of "hey! there's the rape of Europa! So, what happened was...". Modern art to a 4 year old is just silly and fun. Case in point, Jayas favorite installation at the ICA is a projected digital animation called 1st Light - a jumbled mix of people, cars, cell phones, all kinds of things, flying through space higgeldy-piggeldy. I always thought it was quirky and fun, and Jaya loves jumping around on the projections and yelling out the names of things as they hurtle past. Until I finally read the installation description, and learned that it's actually the artists interpretation of the Apocalypse. Sometimes it's better not to read and just be the 4 year old.
