We know spring is officially here, random 45 degree rainy days notwithstanding, when it is nice enough to start going to Drumlin Farm again. Daffodils are blooming! Lambs are frolicking! Chicks are peeping!
We ended up having lunch by the new cow enclosure. Daisy, the big Mamma cow, presided over 4 "grass-fed steer", who, the sign informed us, "do not have names but have colored collars". Of course, Jaya wants to know why these cows do not have names. Awkward Charlottes Web-ian moment ensues. How to inform my sensitive 5 year old that it's easier to eat Yellow Collar than Happy Ears? I gently explained that the farmers don't name the animals who will end up at the market. "You mean like the supermarket, Mommy?" Yes. "Oh! First they have to kill them, right? And then they take out their blood and organs, and then you can eat them!" explained Jaya, happily chomping away on this turkey sandwich. "I don't like organs, do you? Anthony Bourdain likes organs". Apparently, we will not be accomadating vegetarians any time soon.
